UCSF Departments

Two units you should be familiar with include Materiel Management, Facilities Management, and your home department.

Capital Programs and Facilities Management (CPFM) is responsible for all maintenance and repair of the physical infrastructure such as building maintenance, the power plant, water and DI water, and ventilation systems. A building manager is assigned to each building and processes work repair requests handles maintenance emergencies. Your home department may prefer to submit all work requests for you.
Your Home Department/School provides a variety of services through your Management Services Officer (MSO) or Department Manager. Typically, departments and schools have shared resources, department-only core services, preferred service contract vendors for equipment repairs, and copier services as well as the standard fund management, human resources, and ordering services.

Laboratory Equipment Services

Most equipment repair is through a service contract vendor either selected by your department or by you; you should check with your home department before ordering repair service. However, there are several for-fee services on campus that repair basic laboratory equipment, develop custom designs, or provide temporary equipment loans including:

Instructional and Research Technology Services (IRTS)
(Instrument Shop for Repair and Development 476-6396)
Emergency loaners for -80 freezers (FM Service Desk, 476-2021)
Commercial rental of freezers from Milens (510-234-5749)
Equipment Maintenance–CPFM Guide to Services
There might be places on campus that have the equipment you need to pursue your research. You can find more information searching the Research Core Facilities and Services Database at the virtual home for Clinical & Translational Science.

Laboratory Supplies

The University of California's (UC) system wide purchasing power means that you can get deep discounts on the majority of items frequently purchased by UC consumers. In addition to these preferred vendors, UCSF also has several on-campus sources for supplies.

You should work directly with your department's research administrator to place laboratory supply orders and obtain UC discounts.
