NATIONAL NEWS
Federal Economic Recovery Update from the University of California, Office of the President
Here are the key points:
- Congress recognizes that higher education institutions, like the University of California, have a key role in our nation's economic recovery and are part of the solution for putting our country on the path to economic prosperity.
- UC supported passage of the final legislation and specifically the inclusion of the financial aid (more then $15 billion for Pell Grants)and education tax credit provisions, the robust research funding (including strong funding for the National Institutes of Health ($10 billion), National Science Foundation ($3 billion), the Department of Energys Office of Science ($2 billion, including ARPA-E), as well as a number of health care provisions that will allow us to continue to provide high quality care to Californians.
- Congress included funding for states to restore cuts made in education in recent years and that these funds will be available for school modernization as well. Investment in infrastructure will create jobs immediately and provide economic opportunities in our campus communities, while greatly assisting universities, like UC, which have seen severe reductions in capital budgets. UC estimates that for every $100 million invested in infrastructure, an additional $100 million in associated economic activity is generated, and about 3,400 jobs are created. UC will work closely with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on the distribution of funds and to highlight the cost-effective benefits of ongoing investments in higher education infrastructure.
- UC is currently working with federal agencies and the administration to gather more information about how the funds will be distributed. We expect to have more details in the coming days. UC believes it is well positioned to compete effectively for the research funding included in the legislation.
- UC applauds the Administration and the Congressional leadership for their hard work on passing the bill and looks forward to working with Congress as they continue to address the financial issues our country is now facing.
