TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ANIMAL USERS

All personnel conducting procedures on live animals must be appropriately trained and qualified in those procedures. Refer to the IACUC Education and Training Policy for additional information.

(BRER) BASIC REGULATORY AND ETHICAL REQUIREMENT online tutorial

  • All animal users must complete the Basic Regulatory and Ethical Requirements (BRER) course every 3 years. Sign up online.
    • BRER I is required for all personnel on a protocol.
    • BRER II is required for all personnel working with anesthetic agents and/or performing surgery or post-surgical care.

RODENT EUTHANASIA TRAINING

  • All new and current UCSF research personnel are required to attend euthanasia training. The IACUC Training & Compliance staff will make arrangements with PIs to train current lab members.  New users are expected to register for euthanasia training on the online class registration page.

NOTE: As of May 2009, new users that take a rodent basic class do not need to register for the separate euthanasia class.  This training will now be provided in the basic class curriculum.

  • Personnel may not enter any barrier facility after attending this course.

SPECIES-SPECIFIC TRAINING

Species-specific training is required for all personnel who will be in direct contact with animals. All new animal users with less than one year of experience with their specific species must attend an IACUC course on working with that species.

(MHS) MEDICAL HEALTH SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE

(After logging in to RIO click the "Training and Surveys (MHS)" link to complete the new MHS Questionnaire.)

  • All new and current UCSF employees/research personnel who have contact with animals in the course of their work are required to participate in baseline health screening procedures.

  • This MHS Questionnaire has an annual component that must be completed at the time of annual protocol renewal.

  • If you have questions, you may contact:

    • Krista Lindstrom, DVM, MPH
      Public Health Officer

The Facility Orientation will introduce you to the entry/exit procedures, as well as working with mice and rats in the rodent housing and procedure rooms.
