RESEARCH USING DEATH DATA FILES

CHR REVIEW
IS NOW REQUIRED

A new California law effective January 1, 2003 requires IRB approval for any research using individually identifiable information from death data files held by the State Registrar, local registrars, and county recorders.

A UCSF researcher wishing to use such files should submit an application for Expedited review to the CHR (unless other parts of the study require Full Committee review). State law specifies that the research can be approved only if the researcher has a "valid scientific interest" in the information.

Please see the California Health and Safety Code for the full text of the relevant sections of the law.
