THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Review Process

At UCSF, the Conflict of Interest Advisory Committee (COIAC), an academic committee acting under authority from the Chancellor, reviews potential financial conflicts of interest and makes recommendations to the Executive Vice Chancellor for acceptance, acceptance with conditions, or disapproval of the gift, grant or contract. Such review and recommendation must be completed before the University accepts the funding. When clinical studies are being reviewed for conflict of interest purposes, the COIAC will notify the CHR in writing about its findings and actions. Please also refer to the COIAC web page entitled, “Clinical Studies,” for additional information.

Appeal Process

If a faculty member whose conflict has been reviewed does not agree with the Committee's recommendation and the Chancellor’s decision, then the faculty member may call the COIAC Officer and request an appeal. At that time, the appeal process will be described to the faculty member. Typically, the appeal process involves an appearance before the Committee by the faculty member to answer questions and to provide additional information to the Committee.
