Administrative Units

The following units within the Office of Research support the research enterprise by providing high-quality services to investigators and their teams.

Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)
The Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) facilitates clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health; we do this by providing infrastructure, services, and training to enable research to be conducted more efficiently, effectively and in new ways.  To advance our mission, we develop broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment. Our mission is to accelerate research to improve health, and we have been a national leader in this effort since the beginning of the CTSA network.

CTSI provides critical leadership and resources to the UCSF clinical and translational research community through its 16 programs; detailed descriptions for all CTSI programs can be found at https://ctsi.ucsf.edu/about-us/programs

CoLabs
The UCSF CoLabs is a campus-wide resource that promotes collaborative research and team science. CoLabs is based at the Parnassus campus and supports projects that involve technology-intensive approaches including flow cytometry, optical microscopy, and genomics. CoLabs supports both a core model and an innovative CoProject model, where CoLabs teams generate and analyze large, complex datasets in close collaboration with UCSF investigators. Key CoLabs concepts include colocalization of experts and equipment, standardized workflows and data sharing, and deployment of transformative technologies.

Office of Sponsored Research (OSR)
The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) is an advocate for all researchers at UCSF and provides comprehensive pre-award, and non-financial post-award services, including unique full proposal development services and expert contract review and negotiation. OSR includes over 150 research administrators, supporting over 2000 faculty across multiple UCSF campus locations. OSR’s mission is to promote, support, strengthen and grow the robust research enterprise at UCSF. Through teamwork, collaboration, and innovation, OSR provides comprehensive, expert, responsive support and services, enabling faculty to successfully secure external funding, and build collaborations nationally and globally in the conduct of UCSF research. OSR includes the following distinct divisions: Proposals and Grants Division, Contracts and Awards Division, and Industry Contracts Division (ICD).

Office of Clinical Trial Activation (OCTA)
The Office of Clinical Trial Activation (OCTA) provides centralized services in coverage analysis, budget development and protocol calendar building in the UCSF clinical trial management system (CTMS), OnCore. The Online Collaborative Research Environment (OnCore) is a CTMS that enables the management of research, financial, safety, regulatory, biospecimen, and operational data in one system. OCTA works to increase efficiencies and transparency and implement improvements throughout the entire clinical trial pipeline process, as well as develop and provide access to dashboards and regular reporting to leadership and stakeholders. OCTA services improve compliance and enable more rapid activation of clinical trials to increase and improve patient care, provide cutting-edge treatment opportunities for our patients, and advance our research mission.

Research Infrastructure & Operations Office (RIO)

The Research Infrastructure & Operations Office provides key support in the areas of human and animal research oversight, laboratory animal resources, research cores, research development, international research support, and environment, health, and safety.

RIO Units include:

Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S)
We provide guidance and services to the UCSF community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

Human Research Protection Program (HRPP)
The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) reviews and monitors research involving human subjects at UCSF and several affiliate institutions to ensure the welfare, safety, privacy, and ethical treatment of participants in human research studies.

Institutional Animal Care and Use Program (IACUP)
UCSF – Institutional Animal Care Use Committee is “Advancing Health Worldwide” by promoting humane care and the use of animal subjects in research.  The IACUC oversees all UCSF research and instruction that involves vertebrate animals, in order to ensure that the highest ethical and animal welfare standards are met through all applicable federal, state, and University laws and regulations.

International Research Support Operations (IRSO)
IRSO enhances UCSF’s health research globally by providing structured operational and administrative support to faculty, staff, and partners, to efficiently and equitably execute international projects while managing risk and navigating challenges.

Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC)
We provide quality care for all animals used at UCSF, assist researchers in their mission of quality research, act as a resource center for researchers on all issues related to laboratory animals, and assist UCSF in meeting its goal of humane treatment of laboratory animals.

Research Development Office (RDO)
The RDO works collaboratively with individual faculty members, teams of researchers, and institutional administrators and leaders to promote, support, strengthen, and grow the research enterprise at UCSF. We accomplish our mission to promote the research enterprise at UCSF by developing and implementing strategies that increase institutional competitiveness and attract research funding, and by fostering innovative approaches and novel partnerships. The RDO has five programs: Resource Allocation Program (RAP), Limited Submission Program (LSP), Special Scientific Projects, Team Science Program (TSP), and the Large Grant Development Program (LGDP). We are a service- and solutions-oriented team, operating with integrity, professionalism, and respect for those with whom we work within and outside of UCSF.

Research Resource Program (RRP)
We provide strategic planning and implementation of programs to support core facilities and other research resources.
