February 17 Federal Research Update - CDC Funding

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to address last week's news about the Trump administration’s plans to cut some Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health and Human Services (HHS) awards.

Last week, we received official notice of three CDC-sponsored award terminations: one sub-award and two prime awards.

The scope of potentially impacted CDC and HHS awards appears to be limited to a small area of research compared to last year’s more widespread termination of NIH awards. Nonetheless, the termination of these awards impacts programs and services provided through various public service provisions that are vital to our community. We understand the stress that this situation is causing those impacted, their teams, and the populations served.

We are in close contact with the impacted investigators, and we continue to work with UCOP and UCSF on next steps.

The Attorneys General from impacted states, including California, filed a lawsuit against these actions, and a resulting 14-day restraining order is now in place. We anticipate a hold on further terminations until the filed suit is further considered. In the unlikely event that you receive a termination notice while the restraining order is in effect, please immediately contact [email protected] and the OSR Contracts & Awards team at [email protected].

Please continue to refer to our federal research landing page, this digest, and our Research Resource newsletter for updates.

Sincerely,
Hal
