June 17 Federal Research Update

Dear Research Community,

To introduce this week's Federal Research Digest, I want to focus on yesterday’s Massachusetts District Court ruling on a portion of NIH’s award terminations (APHA vs NIH). As of this morning, the ruling is not yet available in print, but news reports have summarized the Judge’s finding that the executive order-motivated terminations of NIH grants by the agency are illegal and that these awards that fall under this ruling should be restored. There are terminated awards at UCSF that we believe fall under this ruling, and we are working to clarify how broadly the ruling will apply. While this case will likely be appealed, this is an important development in our efforts to support our faculty and their research programs.

For the moment, there is no change in NIH policy; impacted grants are still terminated, and we are still complying with the required termination process. I am hopeful that the next few days will bring clarity to when we might expect a change.

In the meantime, please remember to join me and other members of the research leadership for tomorrow’s Office of Research town hall, where we will share updates on our broader advocacy and support efforts for UCSF’s staff, students, and faculty. Register here with your UCSF email address.

You can visit the UCSF Office of Research data dashboard for up-to-date data on award terminations and delays. (You must be on the UCSF network to view.)

Thank you, as always, for your attention to these timely developments, and don’t hesitate to reach me at [email protected].

Yours,

Hal
